George Sawyer's patterned metalwork is an interpretation
of Mokume, an ancient Japanese metalsmith's technique in
which two colors of steel were folded into a swirling mass
of bends and curls. A blade forged from this complicated
billet was of unsurpassed strength and exhibited a beautiful,
wood grain-like surface. Using this technique, George Sawyer
forges billets of colored golds into unique pieces of sculptural
metalwork, each a study in pattern and color, miniature
paintings in gold.
